EU agree zero TAC for deep water sharks

EU Ministers yesterday reached unanimous political agreement on fishing opportunities for deep water sharks.

The agreement effectively sets a zero TAC for deep-sea sharks – for 2011 by-catches of up to 3% of 2009 quotas are permitted, however, for 2012 no catches are permitted.

Although the quotas for bycatch of deep-sea shark species are being set at zero, because deep-sea fishing for other species is still permitted, sharks will continue to be caught and as deep water fisheries have high levels of bycatch and discard along with misreporting and non-reporting of catch, it is difficult to see how effective the regulations will be.

The EC should do more to protect these vulnerable stocks.
