Hammers, tigers, cows and scallops
The scallop industry on both the Atlantic and Pacific seaboards of the USA has just about collapsed as a result of excessive shark (specifically the hammerhead (98% reduction) and tiger (96% reduction)) depletion.
The depletion has led to the exponential explosion in the bottom-feeding cownose ray (the shark’s prey) which, in turn, has decimated the scallop beds.
This provides a prime example of the penalties of ignoring shark conservation.
Dalhousie University (Nova Scotia) conducted the research.
