No Tiree Array

windmillBasking Sharks are being used to fight plans for Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm which is proposed for an area west of the island of Tiree in waters that are a vital mating ground for basking sharks.

The campaign group, No Tiree Array (NTA) want the seas around the 30 square-mile island to be designated a marine nature reserve for the species to prevent Scottish Power Renewables (SPR), owned by the Spanish energy giant Iberdrola, developing a £7 billion scheme which will mean the installation of between 180 to 300 offshore turbines of up to 200 metres high.

Very little research has been done regarding the impact of wind farms on shark species and SSACN especially has concerns about the effect of electro-magnetic forces.

Scottish Power have said that they are carrying out comprehensive surveys in the area to better understand the movements and numbers of a variety of species, however, there has been no indication of how their findings will be scrutinised and independently checked.
