skate tagathon

The Skate Recapture Event evolved from the Common Skate Tagathon which was established specifically to gather data on the inaptly named common skate.

The data from several successful SSTP tagging events, combined with historical data from the Glasgow Museum database and data from Marine Scotland Science provided sufficient data  for extensive analysis to give a good insight into various aspects of their life history.

swimThe analysis had four immediate results :

  • Working in conjunction with the Scottish Government the data was used to support a series of Special Statutory Instruments (SSI’s) which were announced in March 2012 which made Scotland’s sharks the most protected in Europe – a tremendous result for all concerned!
  • It indicated a complex pattern of some form of residency / territorial behavior; some influx of animals during the Spring / Summer months; and migratory corridors do appear to exist between the Sound of Jura, Firth of Lorn, Sound of Mull and Loch Sunart – these factors underpinned our 3rd party MPA proposals.
  • As Marine Scotland Science is supporting our MPA proposals around the common skate we now consider this part of our work as essentially “mission accomplished”.
  • Consequently the Skate Tagathon has now been re-branded as the Skate Recapture Event as it is now aimed at gathering ‘recapture’ data only. In common with all our Events it will not be run as a competition.

For the Skate Recapture Event, we recommend launching at Ardfern Marina, but, for those who choose to launch at Crinan, please be respectful of the locals and park with respect for others. The slipway access is very tight indeed so be very careful whilst manoeuvring. The local harbour trust charges £10 for a launch and retrieve.

Collection and Drop Off point at the Galley of Lorne Inn in Ardfern with registration open from 7.30pm – 9.00pm on Friday and Saturday evenings with the morning registrations at Ardfern Marina from 8.00am – 9.00am on Saturday and Sunday.

Insurance: We have been advised that for insurance purposes we must have the names and addresses of all taggers attending the event, therefore all participants, not just the boat owner/skipper must fill in the online entry form below.

Recapture Records: You will be asked to fill in details of all your recaptured tagged fish at the event.
