Although the Scottish summer might not have lived up to expectations so far this year, the sun did shine bright for this year’s Possilpark Gala Day in Glasgow on the 11th of August. SSACN Education Coordinator David McNair and outreach coach Lewis Cowie attended the event allowing attendees find out more about angling and marine conservation whilst trying their hand at casting.
The event – organised by Young People’s Futures with the support of Glasgow Life and many other local organisations – was a huge success attracting a huge crowd of young and old alike to enjoy the activities on offer. Attractions ranged from football to bouncy castles and even included a makeshift beach.
In keeping with the Olympic spirit SSACN held an “Olympic Rings Casting Event”: a set of Olympic hula-hoops were placed at one end of the casting court and participants were set the challenge of casting a tennis ball into the hoops. For many of the participants it was the first time they had ever held a fishing rod let alone cast one; for other more experienced casters it was a chance to improve their technique and to ask any questions they might have about angling in general. All young casters were then awarded with a SSACN Olympic Rings Casting certificate for their efforts.
We would like to thank everyone who stopped by and made the day so enjoyable. After seeing some of the casting talent showcased at the Possilpark Gala Day we think surfcasting world champion Danny Moeskops better watch out!
